Clinical Observation on 24 Cases of Guillain - Barre Syndrome

Abstract
A clinical observation was made on 24 cases of Guillain-Barre syndrome, admitted to Kwangju Christian Hospital from January 1966 to December 1974, and the following results were obtained.
1. Fifteen cases were found in male and nine cases were female, in a sex ratio 1.7 to 1. The age of 70.8 per cent of the cases was between the third and the fifth decade and the range was from 16 years to 62 years.
2. The seasonal incidence was relatively high in spring and summer but little variation was noted in the annual incidence.
3. Fifteen cases of the 24 had preceding illness, 11 of which were upper respiratory infection.
4. On admission, all 24 cases complained of weakness or paralysis of lower extremities and the muscle stretch reflexes were either diminished or absent. The body temperature was within normal limits in most cases.
5. Albumin ocytologic dissociation of the cerebrospinal fluid was observed in 18 of 24 cases at the lime of admission and was noted also in 4 of the remaining 6 cases one or two weeks later.
6. Overall recovery rate was 79.2 per cent. Most 4 them recovered within 3 months after the onset and 1 patient died, giving a mortality rate of 4.2 percent.
